I have lived in Japan over 30 years, since coming to study about the Japanese language, culture, and my ancestral roots since 1970 and got my Masters at Waseda University graduate school in Classical Theater and Dance, as well as a professional stage name and teaching certificate from the Iwai School of Japanese Classical Dance (Kabuki style). Since then, instead of pursuing an academic career due to my Japanese-American 2nd generation (Nisei) father's sudden death, I relocated my Japanese mother back to Tokyo, and I jumped into the business world and was able to make what I learned come to flourish in the multi-national cosmetics brands such as Aramis (Estee Lauder) and Lancome/Helena Rubinstein (L'Oreal) as marketing manager. Cosmetics is very much a show business in the department store channel. Then, to broaden my business horizon I was invited to join Roland Berger & Partners which taught me further about the various industries and decided to apply all that I had learned in this German management consulting firm by becoming the first female Vice Pesident of Apparel at Reebok Japan. I grew the business from 1.6 to 2.2 billion yen with a small team of 6 which grew into 15, giving profit up to 700 million yen, when I decided to resign and balance the home where there were health issues among my Japanese parents-in-laws and to make sure my stepson was directed into becoming a global citizen. Since then I have been enjoying a small consulting business in communications/PR/marketing/creative arts/ translation/interpreting/oral history interviewing/public speech and leadership training, which has been fulfilling. I also have been able to do a bit of social contribution by founding NPO Global Enhancement of Women's Executive Leadership (GEWEL) to support Japanese women especially to impact the business in Japan and abroad, along with Global Summit of Women to advance the women's economic independence worldwide, Zonta International to advance the status of women worldwide, and Toastmasters International to advance the communication and leadership skills. Now I am at a stage to write a script of the amazing oral histories during the Occupation of men/women, who have fallen in love beyond the boundaries of their nationalities/ cultural identities to share a life that has been truly inspirational because of their wisdom, leadership, and ability to communicate beyond their own language. I also assist the Headmaster of Koryu Toyokai Suibokuka Temae with a master's certificate, a flower arrangement school which teaches to demonstrate by chanting waka (poetry) and arranging the flowers to decorate the home, as well as do a major stage demonstration of flower arrangement creating a beautiful scene from Japanese nature as cultural exchange to build world peace through the love and joy of flowers and their arrangement. Most recent trip was to demonstrate for the Millennium celebration at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia in September, 2007.
I joined this network only last 03 November 2008 when I "met" TOMOE at Ecademy.
I have to get into a "crash program" to learn as much and as fast as possible about the Japanese culture in order to be proper and effective in dealing with Japanese businesspersons, not only those operating here in the Philippines but more importantly, those who are based right there in Japan. Aside from surfing websites from which I can access information about Japan, its people and its culture, I am inclined to believe that interacting with members of e-Groups like this one will facilitate fast tracking my learnings.
I am hoping that you will grant my request for assistance in learning about Japan, its people, and its culture as fast as may be humanly possible via cyberspace.
